Fredie grew up on Manhattan’s Upper West Side among a community of survivors and activists who observed Jewish traditions but were not religious. She attended a Quaker women’s college on Philadelphia’s Main Line and from there moved to Washington DC where she taught elementary and middle school language and social studies before getting a degree in museum education from GWU. Her work in museums included creating education materials and developing traveling exhibitions at a museum of Judaica and at the Smithsonian, as well as site selection and early concept planning at the Holocaust Museum. She currently directs the Smithsonian Associates program for lifelong learning. Fredie lives in Takoma Park with her husband, Mark, whose family settled in the Armenian communities of the northeast between the 1890s and 1917. They are the parents of two IFFP alumni, Jacob and Amye.
